About the role
This role acts as the internal owner for the organisationâs infrastructure, network, and telecommunications services (excluding workplace/endâuser computing), delivered through a Managed Service Provider (MSP) model. Its main responsibility is to ensure that all MSPâdelivered services align with the organisationâs technology roadmaps, architectural standards, contractual service levels, operational governance, financial expectations, and internal changeâcontrol processes.
Beyond dayâtoâday service ownership, the role plays a key part in supporting the organisationâs IT carveâout. It collaborates closely with the Infrastructure Architect and the Joint Design Authority to ensure that new infrastructure and network services are designed and delivered in line with architectural standards and futureâstate requirements.
This is an individualâcontributor role reporting to the IT&D Senior Manager, Infrastructure & Services. It requires frequent engagement with architecture and security teams, technology leadership, product and application teams, procurement/vendor management, and the MSPâs service management and delivery teams.
The position holds significant influence over the stability, resilience, and longâterm direction of core infrastructure services. It offers strong development opportunities toward senior service ownership, supplierâmanagement leadership roles, or positions in technology strategy.
Your responsibilities
- Act as internal service owner for IT infrastructure, network and telecom services, including cloud platforms, data centre hardware, storage, physical servers, backup & recovery, and network appliances.
- Ensure all MSP-delivered services align with enterprise architecture standards, roadmaps, availability targets, resilience principles, and security requirements.
- Govern MSP performance against SLAs, KPIs, and contractual commitments, ensuring consistent, transparent service reporting.
- Lead regular service reviews, challenge underperformance, and drive corrective and preventive actions.
- Manage the full lifecycle of infrastructure services, including refresh cycles, upgrades, enhancements, consolidation, and decommissioning.
- Oversee cost management activities such as budgeting, forecasting, invoice validation, service consumption analysis, and identifying cost-optimisation opportunities.
- Govern all infrastructure-related changes through internal change control processes and represent services at CAB when required.
- Review MSP technical change proposals to ensure alignment with standards, architectural direction, and operational readiness.
- Engage with business stakeholders to capture service requirements and ensure services evolve to meet organisational, operational, and regulatory needs.
- Communicate infrastructure updates, incidents, risks, and improvements effectively to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Maintain accurate service documentation including service definitions, runbooks, operational procedures, asset inventories, and dependency mappings.
- Ensure infrastructure services comply with regulatory, security, data-handling, and audit requirements.
- Identify and drive service improvements, modernisation initiatives, automation, and operational efficiency across network, telecom, and cloud infrastructure.
- Contribute to infrastructure strategy and investment planning, covering capacity management, resilience design, and long-term technical roadmaps.
The experience we're looking for
- Strong understanding of cloud infrastructure and cloud networking, including cloud architecture, landing zones, identity and access management, governance frameworks, and security baselines.
- Strong understanding of nonâcloud infrastructure such as data centre hardware, physical servers, hypervisors, SAN/NAS storage, backup and recovery platforms, and related operational processes.
- Strong grasp of enterprise networking technologies including LAN/WAN, SDâWAN, VNETs, peering, routing, switching, firewalls, segmentation, zeroâtrust principles, secure remote access, and connectivity services.
- Good understanding of telecom technologies including SIP, VoIP, PSTN migration, unified communications platforms, and mobile service management.
- Proven ability to manage complex, multiâlayered outsourced services and hold MSPs accountable for service quality, performance, and delivery outcomes.
- Solid knowledge of IT service management frameworks and processes, particularly incident, problem, change, configuration, and service continuity management.
- Strong financial literacy related to service cost models, consumptionâbased billing, operational budgeting, forecasting, and costâoptimisation opportunities.
- Ability to interpret and apply architectural standards, resilience and availability principles, compliance controls, and security policies.
- Excellent stakeholder engagement, influencing, and communication skills, with the ability to translate technical topics for diverse audiences.
- Strong analytical skills to interpret service data, identify trends, assess risks, and produce clear, actionable insights.
- Skilled in producing accurate service documentation, governance artefacts, reporting packs, runbooks, and operational guides.
