About Balyasny Asset Management
Balyasny Asset Management (BAM) is a global multi-strategy hedge fund managing assets across equities, commodities, macro, and credit. Our technology and data infrastructure is a core competitive advantage, and we are investing significantly in scaling our data platform to support the firm's continued growth.
The Opportunity
The Data Platform team builds and maintains data centric applications for the firm’s use. These include the internal data catalog, general data access technologies, and data related AI tooling. We are seeking an engineer with experience building user-facing data-related applications.
The role consists of contributing to products at various levels of maturity. From those requiring careful phasing out, to those widely used but in need of improvement, to greenfield projects with opportunities for a very real firm-wide impact. Our AI-powered semantic data access layer is one of the most visible products in the firm, and you'll work directly on extending it. We’re looking for someone who doesn't just use AI tools but actively experiments with new approaches and pushes the team forward. A product-oriented engineer with an ability to navigate ambiguity while still maintaining technical depth and enjoys high impact projects would excel in this role.
Key Responsibilities
• Contribute to features and products within the Data Platform for data and metadata access.
• Apply a product-oriented mindset to what you’re doing.
• Build reliable applications and assess operational risks at review and release time.
• Build runbooks, alerting, and operational processes so your services run reliably.
• Be a keen adopter of AI coding tools and workflows and share learnings with the team.
• Work effectively with guidance from senior team members on a geo-distributed team, with growing independence.
• Communicate proactively across time zones, through documentation, async updates, and direct user channels to keep stakeholders informed and unblock yourself without waiting.
What We're Looking For
Experience
• 3+ years in software engineering. Experience directly with data or metadata access technologies is a plus, especially in the financial services domain.
• Demonstrated experience contributing to process improvements within teams particularly around service operations and AI adoption.
• Demonstrated experience participating in projects across multiple phases, with growing comfort navigating ambiguity.
Required Skills & Knowledge
• Solid understanding of the complexities and challenges of building reliable and performant data access technologies.
• 2+ years programming experience with Python, with excellent debugging acumen.
• Comfort writing and debugging SQL statements.
• Experience with various layers of testing and automating tests.
Preferred Skills & Knowledge
• Experience managing services with Kubernetes.
• Experience using Copilot, Cursor, Claude Code, Codex, or similar agentic coding tooling.
• Proficiency using Grafana, Loki, Open Telemetry/Tempo, Prometheus, or similar technologies (such as AWS CloudWatch, Datadog, etc.)
• Experience with AWS.
• Experience with Kafka.
• Experience with federated query engines such as Trino.
Mindset
• You believe modern data functions should be built with engineering, automation, and AI at the core, not layered on after the fact.
• You’re impact oriented and can balance delivering quickly with scalable, sustainable engineering.
• You care about process and repeatability. You look for ways to prevent recurring issues and are eager to learn how to build scalable solutions.
• You understand the value of AI as a key point of leverage. You lean into it rather than fear it and are proactive in molding workflows that streamline your work and help others. You are a self-starting learner and generally curious.
• You are comfortable working through ambiguity with guidance and hold yourself to high operational standards.
• You thrive in an execution-oriented environment and are eager to understand customer problems and contribute to their solutions within deadlines.
Why This Role
• High-visibility role with direct impact on critical applications used across the firm.
• Opportunity to shape AI driven coding best-practices within the team, and AI driven data access patterns across the firm.
• Contributing to a mix of legacy and greenfield projects on a small team, with high potential for autonomy, ownership, and impact.
• Work at the intersection of cutting-edge technology and institutional finance.
• Competitive compensation, benefits, and a collaborative, intellectually rigorous culture.
• Balyasny Asset Management is an equal opportunity employer.
Even if your experience doesn't match every requirement, we'd still love to hear from you. If you're excited about this role, we encourage you to apply!
